Ginzan

The Ginzan hot spring is located in the mountains of Obanazawa City, Yamagata. With the milky white water particularly effective for curing fatigue and relieving stress, Ginzan has been popular as a therapeutic bathing resort for more than 400 years. The greatest attraction of Ginzan is the old wooden Japanese inns and the atmosphere of the town, which make you feel as if you were transported back to 100 years ago in Japan. Three- and four-storied old Japanese inns stand side by side along the Ginzan River, and the lamps hanging under the eaves and gas lamps on the bridges create unforgettable evening scenery. Ginzan, meaning “silver mountain”, derives its name from a silver mine discovered there around 500 years ago. Ginzan Onsen is a place highly recommended to people who want to forget the hustle and bustle of the city, feel relaxed and enjoy the atmosphere of good old Japan.

Yamadera

Located in Yamagata Prefecture, which is often called the Fruits Kingdom, Yamadera is a popular tourist destination. The train ride takes 20 minutes from JR Yamagata Station or 1 hour from JR Sendai Station by JR Senzan Line. Yamadera literally means mountain temple. As the name implies, the entire mountain is a sacred place, including temples, a large number of Buddhist statues, and some historical monuments as well. It features unique and mysterious rock formations in the cedar forest. It’s also well-known for the place where the world-famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited in the 17th century. It is said that climbing up more than 1,000 stone steps will remove your desires and uncleanness. Weather permitting, the view from the observation area is breathtaking and something you don’t want to miss. For all scenery lovers, Yamadera is the best place.
